I’m going to get real serious with you today friends… We’re diving into our FAVORITE TV shows to watch together! Brandon and I love adventuring, more than anything. We love traveling, exploring new places, and trying new things. But we’re also both homebodies who love quiet nights on our couch, cuddled up with our crazy dog and a bowl of popcorn while we just hang out together. In the verrry early days of our relationship, we bonded over a shared love of the show Lost. We binge-watched all 6 seasons in just a few months so that we could watch the finale air live. And since then we’ve watched a lot of shows together, but only a few will go down as our favorites.
Our Top 10 Shows to watch Together
"The survivors of Oceanic Flight 815 were 1,000 miles off course when they crashed on a lush, mysterious island. Each person possesses a shocking secret, but they've got nothing on the island itself, which harbors a monstrous security system, a series of underground bunkers and a group of violent survivalists hidden in the shadows."
This show will forever be one of our FAVORITES of all time. It was the first show we ever watched together, and we were obsessed. 4, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42.
2) White Collar
"The third time turns out to be the charm for criminal Neal Caffrey. He has been eluding FBI agent Peter Burke for years, a run that finally comes to an end with his capture. But after the resourceful prisoner escapes from a maximum-security facility, then is nabbed once again by Burke, Caffrey suggests a different end-game: In return for freedom, he'll help the Feds catch long-sought criminals. Though skeptical, Burke soon realizes that Caffrey's instincts and insight are a rare commodity. Caffrey's trusted friend and co-conspirator with ties to the criminal underworld, Mozzie, also becomes a useful source for Burke and the FBI."
I was the first one to become obsessed with Neal Caffrey... I mean White Collar, and it wasn't long before I got Brandon hooked too.
"In need of an associate, big-time Manhattan corporate lawyer Harvey Specter hires the only guy who impresses him -- college dropout Mike Ross. The fact that Ross isn't actually a lawyer isn't lost on Specter, who believes his new right-hand man is a legal prodigy with the book smarts of a Harvard law grad and the street smarts of a hustler. However, in order to keep their jobs, the charade must remain strictly between these two unconventional thinkers. Eventually, the secret Ross is hiding gets out, leading to his arrest and trouble for the firm."
Suits filled the White Collar sized hole in our hearts, and we quickly fell in love with Mike & Harvey just like we did with Peter & Neal.
4) Game of Thrones
" George R.R. Martin's best-selling book series "A Song of Ice and Fire" is brought to the screen as HBO sinks its considerable storytelling teeth into the medieval fantasy epic. It's the depiction of two powerful families -- kings and queens, knights and renegades, liars and honest men -- playing a deadly game for control of the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros, and to sit atop the Iron Throne."
Brandon watched the first three seasons of GoT alone, and I just didn't see the appeal. But after all my friends told me I needed to watch it, I finally gave in and started season one... it didn't take long to catch up! We're currently impatiently awaiting season 7. Winter is here.
"Three young men and three young women - of the BFF kind - live in the same apartment complex and face life and love in New York. They're not above sticking their noses into one another's businesses and swapping romantic partners, which always leads to the kind of hilarity average people will never experience - especially during breakups."
Okay, this one probably didn't even need a description, but this classic is one we could watch over and over and over again and never get sick of. Chandler is our favorite, for the record.
"Dexter Morgan is a Miami-based blood splatter expert who doesn't just solve murders; he commits them too. In fact, he's a serial killer -- but he only murders the guilty, so he feels justified with his lifestyle choices. His policewoman sister and his cop co-workers have no idea Dexter lives a double life; however, adoptive father Harry knows his secret, and does, in fact, help Dexter hone his "skills." It's a unique brand of justice for which charming Dexter feels a psychological hunger."
We've never cheered for the 'bad-guy' so hard. He might be a serial killer, but goodness we loved Dexter!
"A young attending physician and his fellow doctors practice mischief and medicine while learning life lessons at the Sacred Heart teaching hospital."
Brandon watched through all of Scrubs at least three times before I finally watched it too. I regretted waiting so long!
8) Parks & Recreation
"Leslie Knope, a midlevel bureaucrat in an Indiana Parks and Recreation Department, hopes to beautify her town (and boost her own career) by helping local nurse Ann Perkins turn an abandoned construction site into a community park, but what should be a fairly simple project is stymied at every turn by oafish bureaucrats, selfish neighbors, governmental red tape and a myriad of other challenges. Leslie's colleague Tom Haverford, who delights in exploiting his position for personal gain, is as likely to undermine her efforts as to help her, while her boss, Ron Swanson, is adamantly opposed to government in any form, even though he's a bureaucrat himself."
Just like Scrubs I was late getting into Parks & Rec, but goodness am I obsessed now! We couldn't pick a favorite character if we tried, although Ron & Andy have to be up there. Also, please remember to always be the Leslie Knopp of whatever you do.
9) New Girl
"After going through a rough breakup, awkward and upbeat Jess (Zooey Deschanel) moves in with three single guys. Intelligent and witty Nick is an underachiever who took the bartender off-ramp on his road to success. Schmidt obsesses over his social standing and looks at Jess as a personal project. Winston is a competitive former athlete who, after realizing he will never become a pro, moves into the loft. Together with Jess' best friend, Cece, they bond to form an unlikely, and dysfunctional, family."
Another one we could watch repeatedly, this crew always makes us laugh.
10) This Is Us
"The series follows fraternal twins Kate and Kevin along with their adopted brother Randall as their lives intertwine. Episodes weave through the stories of the past and present of the characters."
This show is still in season one, but we hope it sticks around for a LONG time. A fast favorite, even though we end up crying during every single episode. Seriously, SO many tears! But it's sooooo good.
BONUS!!! While we love watching shows together, we also have a long list of personal favorites that the other just doesn’t feel the same about…
Sara's other 5 favs:
1) TGIT (Grey's Anatomy, Scandal, and How to Get Away with Murder)
Okay, technically this is three shows. But I'm combining them into one since they're all part of Shonda Rhime's amazing TGIT lineup. Seriously, I just want to share a bottle of wine with Shonda and thank her for bringing me so many seasons of shows I can't get enough of.
2) Gilmore Girls
I'm still torn regarding the new Netflix revival, but when it comes to the original series, Gilmore Girls will always be near the very top of my list.
After I finished binge-watching Brothers & Sisters, everyone suggested that I watch Parenthood to fill the hole I was left with. And while I love B&S too, Parenthood is one of those classic shows that you can't stop watching. Thank goodness This Is Us came along to help fill the Parenthood void!
4) Gossip Girl
Okay, don't judge me too quickly. This one is a total guilty pleasure, but I couldn't watch it fast enough! Those upper east siders hooked me. xoxo
5) One Tree Hill
This one could have gone on our main list of shows we watched together, but Brandon just doesn't feel as strongly about it as I do. I got Brandon hooked in season one by convincing him there was a ton of basketball involved, but he quickly got just as entangled in the characters as I was. He started losing interest about mid-way through the series though. I on the other-hand have re-watched the entire series more times than I care to admit. And I can almost guarantee that if we have a daughter some day, her name will come from this show... but I'll keep the list of names to myself for now!
Brandon's other 5 favs:
...written by Brandon!!
1) The Office
A ridiculous comedy that I watch repeatedly. It makes me tear up from laughter as much as I cringe. I've fallen in love with each of the characters through the many seasons.
2) Battlestar Galactica
Drawing you into a futuristic world full of Artifical Intelligence, it seem like something that could actually happen in the future, and brings out my inner sci-fi nerd.
3) Arrested Development
One of the most meticulously underrated comedies with new jokes found each time I re-watch the series.
4) It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia
They're the worst people in the world, but I can't get enough of their crazy antics and idiotic ideas. Sara just started watching it with me, but I'm pretty sure she doesn't find it quite as hilarious as I do.
5) Breaking Bad
One of the best storylines that continually draws you into the rabbit hole that is Walter White's decline into a power hungry drug lord.
And there you have it!! What are some of your favorite shows of all time (especially ones that aren't on our list)??!
