Their 2 year dating anniversary was approaching, and Sara had been planning the perfect weekend getaway to celebrate both that and Brandon’s 20th birthday. A weekend in Denver, with the highlight being #1 on Brandon’s bucket-list: see Blink 182 live in concert - Brandon’s all-time favorite band! He could barely contain his excitement on the 10 hour drive to the Mile High City. They spent their first morning in the city exploring and relaxing; strolling the 16th Street Mall, Sara introducing Brandon to Chipotle for the first time, and getting a couple’s massage near their hotel.

Once they were relaxed and ready to explore, they headed straight to the Aquarium. They took selfies with the sharks and jellyfish, and spent way too long laughing at the surprise tiger at the Aquarium… because last they checked, he wasn’t exactly an aquatic animal. Next it was back to the hotel so Sara could get ready for their 2nd anniversary dinner. They had selected a fancy restaurant downtown, Sara bought a new dress, Brandon bought a new tie, and they took a million selfies at the hotel before even heading to dinner. On the drive over they stopped to grab a celebratory bottle of champagne, then proceeded to the restaurant. Sara, wanting to capture every moment of their weekend, asked their waiter to take their picture. He took one, looked at the camera, laughed loudly, then asked to take a second. When they got the camera back they quickly realized why; the couple behind them was making out in the first photo! Instant favorite hilarious memory. However, all through dinner something felt off; Brandon was oddly quiet, and Sara was starting to feel like something was wrong. He was acting so weird and Sara hated that he kept saying everything was fine when something was clearly not normal. But they finished dinner and Brandon suggested a drive to the capitol building; he claimed that he heard about this step that was exactly one mile above sea level and wanted to find it.

On the drive between the restaurant and the capitol building they met more construction than one person should have to deal with in a day, and Brandon was getting noticeably frustrated. Sara suggested they skip the capitol for the evening and head back to their hotel to drink the champagne they had bought to celebrate their anniversary. But Brandon was determined to find a way around the construction and to the capitol. He was still acting weird, and Sara was so frustrated that she couldn’t figure out why. Brandon however, was far more nervous. You see, he had been trying to act cool for weeks, months even. He’d been hiding a HUGE secret from Sara… a diamond ring!!! When they were at the hotel earlier that afternoon getting ready for dinner, Brandon had slipped it into his pocket, where it felt like the heaviest item burning a hole right through his dress slacks. All through dinner, his head was spinning with finding the perfect words; how could he possibly focus on dinner when he knew what was coming next?! And that construction? Good God Denver! Didn’t the city know what he was planning? He NEEDED to get to the capitol building.

Somehow, they found a way around the construction and made it to the capitol. They parked the car, and started walking to the front of the building with the step that was exactly one mile above sea level. There was a small carnival happening in the empty space next to the capitol building, and the country love songs were audible as they strolled hand in hand. Earlier at dinner Sara had referenced one of her favorite movies: 10 Things I Hate About You. And as they were strolling, Brandon told Sara that it had made him think of the 10 things he loved about her. So as they walked slowly around the capitol building, Brandon started telling Sara the 10 things he most loved about her, and as they approached number 8 they had found the step that was exactly One Mile Above Sea Level. They took a seat right there, and Brandon continued through his list. Sara’s heart was fully melted by this point. She had this feeling in the pit of her stomach; uncontrollable butterflies. Something BIG was happening in this moment, and to this day Sara still isn’t 100% sure what Brandon said in those sweet moments, because her heart and mind were racing a million miles per minute.

Brandon reached number 10, and then he grabbed Sara by the hand and pulled her to her feet. He held both of her hands, starred her in the eyes, and said that those 10 things were just a small number of reasons that he loved her. That she was the most perfect woman he’d ever met. And that he couldn’t imagine spending his life with anyone else to adventure with. And then he slowly dropped her hands, reached into his pocket, pulled out a small red box, and got down on one knee. Sara was full blown crying by this point, as Brandon opened the box and with the biggest smile on his face, he asked, “Sara Jeanne, will you marry me?!

Sara screamed YES loud enough for the whole neighboring carnival to hear as Brandon slid the ring onto her finger. They stayed in that moment for what felt like an eternity; hugging, kissing, laughing, and a whole lot of Sara staring at the shiny new ring on her left hand. They asked a couple walking by to take their photo, and then Sara grabbed her phone to call home. It barely rang once before her dad answered and without even allowing a hello said, “It’s about damn time! I’ve been waiting by the phone all night!!!” Which caused Sara to cry and laugh even harder. Her dad then reminded her of a conversation they had years prior; Sara had just been through the worst break-up she’d ever experienced in her teen years, and as she laid in bed crying one evening, her dad told her that he knew God had a plan for her life, and that it included a man who was perfect for her. He was certain of it. And so after Sara excitedly told him all about the proposal, he reminded her of that. He told her, “See? What did I tell you. God has had the perfect guy for you all along. And I’m so glad that it’s Brandon.” Gah!!! This daddy’s girl was a full puddle of tears by this point. Once they happy tears subsided, they headed back to their hotel room and drank champagne out of plastic water cups. They may not have remembered real champagne flutes, but at least they remembered the important part: the champagne!

The next day they explored the Denver Zoo in the morning, and then made their way to the concert to see Blink 182. All day long they had the largest smiles spread across their faces, and Sara found it hard to stop sneaking peeks at her new ring every 5 seconds. Once Blink hit the stage they both held hands and danced the night away, singing every song at the top of their lungs.

At that point in their lives, neither Sara nor Brandon could recall a time when they’d been happier. Their weekend in Denver had changed their lives, and they were so excited to get home and tackle what came next; THE WEDDING!!!

Please note the photo bombers in the far left of the picture below... clearly, we weren't the only ones celebrating romance that evening!
